Thanks to its location, Mâcon was initially a stage town for Paris-Nice and then for the Critérium du Dauphiné, which stopped here again last June, when Britain’s Jake Stewart was the victor. The Tour de France first stopped here in 1991. Since then, the race has returned on a number of occasions, notably for a stage finish in 2006 after the riders exited the Alps (won by Italian Matteo Tosatto), as well as for two starts on stages to Saint-Étienne (2009) and then Dijon (2024).
