The history
Lidl-Trek is an American-Italian team financed by a supermarket chain and a bicycle brand. The team shares everything with its male counterpart (staff, equipment and jerseys). It is a single organisation, although the men's team was established well before the women's team (in 2011 versus 2019). The women's team has competed at the highest level since its inception. Fifth in the UCI rankings in its inaugural season, it finished at the top of the table in 2020, led by Elizabeth Deignan, Ellen Van Dijk, and Elisa Longo Borghini, who left this winter to join UAE Team ADQ.
Former world champion Elisa Balsamo strengthened the team in 2022, and the emergence of Gaia Realini (fifth in last year's Tour) will allow it to aim for the top in the mountains alongside recruits Niamh Fisher-Black and Riejanne Markus. Its collective strength is impressive. It is by playing the numbers game that Lidl-Trek regularly makes a difference.
