Sub-prefecture of Seine-et-Marne (77)
Population: 55,000 (Meldois and Meldoises), 107,000 within the 26 communes comprising the Pays de Meaux municipality, 1,422,000 in Seine-et-Marne

It was in Meaux during the 2003 centenary edition of the Tour that Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi claimed the first of his six Tour stage victories. In addition, 1980 Tour champion Joop Zoetemelk was a hotelier in the capital of the Brie region for a long time. The city of the great orator Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, with its Gallo-Roman ramparts, religious heritage and its Museum of the Great War, is also very forward-looking: its 55,000 inhabitants make it the most populous and one of the most dynamic municipalities in Seine-et-Marne, and the ESC Meaux has a very active cycling school.
