The inhabitants of the “city of 25 towers”, built entirely from locally quarried red sandstone, very quickly realised the importance of safeguarding its exceptional heritage, dating mainly from its period of prosperity in the 16th century thanks to local wine production. Collonges, which became “la Rouge” in 1969, is now a listed site with around thirty buildings classified as “historic monuments”. Among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, Collonges-laRouge has become a cultural and touristic Mecca that can only be entered by cyclists and pedestrians between May and September.
